Austin Chronicle...July 9, 2009:
Another death:
Bert Winston: producer, American Shadows. I'd known of Bert for years. He was the guy behind Tommy Morrell's records. The How the West Was Swung series that Tommy and Bert Winston produced remain, in my opinion, the absolute best Western Swing records ever. Tommy Morrell joined us on our Cool and Unusual Punishment CD. Bert called me completely out of the blue one day in 2008 and by the end of our very brief conversation, he'd agreed to fund the "Moon Mullican project." Apparently Tommy had spoken highly of us. I considered it something akin to a miracle. The single consideration he asked was a dedication to Tommy. I had planned on it already. We played his birthday party in November of 2008. We had a great time. Bert was a true gentleman, and he truly loved Western Swing, including our unruly bunch. To quote Barbara Martin: "The music community is devastated as he was a major supporter and benefactor of our music..."
"The definitive tribute to a legend, Moon Mullican. Five stars to The Cornell Hurd Band!"- Joe Baker, MTD Radio, Ruidoso, NM
